Dog Euthanasia
(Putting Your Dog Down)
Often putting your elderly dog down seems to be the
kindest option, especially if he is suffering from an illness
or is showing uncomfortable symptoms of old age. Although a
terrible decision to make, your family may be advised by your
vet that it is the right thing to do. These questions may help
you make up your mind:
- Is my dog's condition prolonged, recurring, or getting
worse?
- Is my dog's condition no longer responding to
treatment?
- Is my dog in pain, or suffering physically or
mentally?
- Is it no longer possible to alleviate his pain?
- If my dog recovers, will he be chronically ill or an
invalid? Will he be able to fend for himself?
- If my dog recovers, will his personality change?
If you answer "yes", then euthanasia is the humane
option.
If you answer "no", then ask the following questions:
- Can we provide the necessary care?
- Will providing this care provide problems for, or
interfere with, family life?
- Can we meet the cost, even if it escalates?
