Leaving Your Dog Alone
If you find that you need to leave your dog alone for long
stretches of time, you need to be aware of the many behavioral
problems that can occur because of it. When you leave your dog
alone, you'll find that he is both confronted with the stress
of being without direction and the pain of being lonely. Dogs
are very social and depriving them of company can be very
difficult on them.

Even small dogs needs to be acclimatized to their
environment before they are left alone while you are at work.
You need to make sure that their physical needs are met, and
they must have adequate water and food. You should
also make sure that they have room to roam and that they should
have plenty of paper on the ground in the room that they
inhabit in order to keep messes to a minimum.
Many people decide that they will come home during their
lunch break to make sure that their dogs are doing well and to
let them out as necessary. You'll also find that a dog walker
can help you alleviate your dog's loneliness and stress.
According to the experts, puppies needs to be
socialized for a few hours of every day, and in
theory, if you can introduce them to lots of people
and other dogs, they should stay healthy and friendly.
This is especially important in the seven to twelve week old
range, when a puppy is quite impressionable.
An adult dog, which can eat just once a day, can be walked
in the morning and in the evening, but you should still make
sure that he sees you often: staying out for more than 8 hours
at a stretch can be stressful for him (and many dog owners
would say that it is cruel). You'll also find that if you don't
get him on a schedule that you might be coming home to a real
mess.
Think carefully about leaving a dog alone for long periods
of time. If, on the odd occasion, it is unavoidable, your
dog will forgive you. If you are considering taking in a dog
while knowing that you will be working every day and unable to
provide good companionship for him - change your mind! It's
just not fair to the dog, and in the long run you may very well
regret it.
